  • Birthing A Miracle

Luke 1 tells us the story of 2 different people receiving the same miracle of birth. First, Luke tells us about an old priest named Zechariah. Zechariah was married to Elizabeth, and they were a couple who “were upright in the sight of the God, observing all the Lord’s commandments and regulations blamelessly.” (Luke 1:6) But Elizabeth was barren. She never had children and now she and her husband were up in age.

On the day that it was Zechariah’s turn to serve in the temple, an angel appeared to him. He told Zechariah not to be afraid, God had heard his prayer and Elizabeth was going to have a son. Their son was the future John the Baptist! The angel began to reveal all the mighty things their son would do. Shocked and confused by the news, I’m sure, Zechariah asked, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man and my wife is well along in years.” (vr.18) To this, the angel revealed himself as Gabriel; that he stood in the presence of God and was sent to tell him this good news. (As in, “I know what I am talking about.”) For Zechariah’s disbelief, Gabriel took away his speech. He became mute and would not be able to talk until after his son was born.

Six months later, Gabriel was sent out again to Nazareth to a young, engaged to be married girl named, Mary. Gabriel said, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God.” (vr.30) We know that Mary was to be the mother of our Savior Jesus, the one who would save us from our sins.
Also shocked and confused, Mary asked, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” (vr.34) Gabriel said that they Holy Spirit would come upon her, and the power of the Most High would overshadow her. (vr.35) In verse 37, Gabriel says, “For nothing is impossible with God.”

When I read this chapter this morning, I knew God was trying to tell me something. But what? God wants to birth within us a miracle, whether we have the resources or not to bring it forward. Conception and pregnancy are miracles within themselves, but it’s simple biology to know that you need an egg and a sperm (a man and a woman) to make a baby. Zechariah and Elizabeth had the physical means (some what, remember Elizabeth was barren) for their miracle; where Mary had to rely fully on God’s promise alone to bring her miracle to pass.

Here we have two people, Zechariah and Mary. Two people, who the Bible tells us, were upright, walked blamelessly and were favored by God. Zechariah was a priest; surely he should have been able to believe God. In fact, it shocks me he didn’t, for this same miracle had already been done before, for his father Abraham! Zechariah had to have had this story memorized. Yet, he asked, “How can I be sure?” Sound familiar? Has God ever promised you something would happen?  You read His promises in His Word, they are brought to you through prophecy, and yet we ask, “How can I be sure you’re going to do this?” Is God a liar? (Numbers 23:19) NO!

Zechariah’s problem was that in his heart he had doubt deeply rooted. Doubt abundantly took ground, and from the abundance of his heart, he spoke doubt. So God shut him up! I’m sure he had a lot to think about over the course of those 10 months. Maybe God has to shut up the doubt in your heart, in your mouth. He will bring your promise to pass.

Then there is Mary. When she is introduced into history, we know hardly anything about her. Except that she was a virgin, engaged to be married to Joseph, who had found favor with God. Gabriel shows up and tells her of the coming things to be, but Mary also asks, “How can this be?” Her questioning doesn’t frazzle me so much, because indeed, she was a virgin. Without the physical act of sex with a man, how could a pregnancy happen? Gabriel tells her, however, that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and the power of the Most High would overshadow her. For nothing is impossible for God!

Maybe you are like Mary. Maybe your circumstances make it seem totally impossible for your miracle to come through. Yet, if you have found favor with the Most High, believe that his power will overshadow you! His power will completely cover you and take control! Mary’s outcome was different. She answered, “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said.” (Luke 1:38) Mary had faith!

It is never said of Zechariah that he found favor with God. Not that God did not honor Zechariah for his obedience, but the favor that Mary had found was the pleasure that she had brought to God’s heart! We know that without faith it is impossible to please God. (Hebrews 11:6) Mary had faith in her heart deeply rooted and grounded, and it flowed out of her mouth like living water! “I am the Lord’s servant. Let it be done.”

Let’s take from both stories. Let’s silence the doubt in our heart to what God can do. Remember that you are his servant and let God be God! For nothing is impossible for God and with God! Let God birth a miracle of faith inside you!

  • Tasty Morsels Of Word Vomit

I may feel that I don't have much to be worked on in my life, but the few things that are out of order are doozies! One of my biggest issues is with gossip and my words! If you are a woman, you definitely know what I'm talking about.
I try very hard not to gossip or tear others down with my words, but it's a big job to handle on my own... especially when it feels so good.

Proverbs 18:8(NIV) "The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man's inmost parts." Another version (NKJV) says that the words of a gossip are like tasty trifles. When we or other people begin to regurgitate gossip (word vomit), it goes down smoothly into our souls. However, being saved and having the Holy Spirit in me gives me a much different result. Though the words may go down smoothly and sweetly like honey, later the words turn bitter in my soul. It's like eating too much candy. The Message version of the Bible says this:
"Listening to gossip is like eating cheap candy; do you really want junk like that in your belly?" Proverbs 18:8
Do you really want junk like that in your belly (soul, spirit)? No. We have no use for gossip in our lives. Many people make their livelihood spreading gossip about others. Why do we feel the need to know and have an opinion on other people's business?

About 10 years ago, my pastor preached on this very subject. He said that the best way to get away from gossip is to ask yourself two questions: Am I part of the problem? Am I part of the solution? If we are not personally part of the problem, you have no use talking about the other person. If you cannot give a biblical or sound solution, you have no use talking about the other person. And let me tell you, people get offended when you stop them from spreading their news. Don't worry about that. We must be examples of love and correct our weaker brothers and sisters in Christ. Even if your local gossip is not a Christian, you will shine a much needed light of Christ!

"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the law and the Prophets." Matthew 7:12(NIV)
We hate finding out that others are spreading our personal business all over the place. So if we hate it and it hurts, why wouldn't we think that other people wouldn't feel the same?

The Bible tells us to flee (run) from sexual immorality and to flee from idolatry. In the same manner, we should RUN away from gossip and/or those who are gossiping. We always have the opportunity to be the bigger and wiser person. (I Corinthians 10:12-13) Let's take it! Don't find yourself eating up word vomit.

  • I Surrender

There is a song that I love that talks about surrendering all to God. When I sing it, my spirit fills up and I feel like I want to burst. This morning, in my car, I was listening to the song again and I began to pray, "Lord, reveal to me what I have yet to surrender." I tried to think, and there are many things that I constantly have to leave at the feet of Christ. However, speaking to my dad on the phone today, I think I found a sore spot.

My mom and dad divorced when I was a baby. All my life my dad has lived in California. Two years ago, almost 3 now, he left everything in California and moved his wife and my younger brother and sisters to Honduras. It took me a bit to make my peace with that. I go through it in my head. He could of gone any where. He could of come back to New Orleans, but he didn't. Now they're trying to come back to the States and I hear him talk about moving to New York or to Miami where my step mom's brother lives. It's like a knife twisting in my heart.

Yet, God spoke to me. I have to surrender my dad. I have to surrender what I want my dad to do. He isn't a single man any more. He has a wife and 3 kids, and he has to do what is best for them. Though I didn't have my dad around for most of my life, I cannot stand in the way of my baby siblings missing out on their father. It hurts so bad, but I know that God supplies all my needs. Even my need to have a father.

God is my Father. My sweet Abba. My daddy. He is the one who takes care of me, who loves me perfectly and will never leave my side.
"For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out 'Abba Father'." (Romans 8:15)
When we come to Christ Jesus, he breaks off every chain of fear and rejection, and he replaces it with a Spirit of acceptance and security.

No matter what it may be that is festering inside you, surrender. Surrender it to the Lord. "And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches and glory by Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:19)
We never truly lose anything. Whatever hole we think we'll have by surrendering, Jesus will fill it up.

  • Prayer to know God's will, to be fruitful in ministry & strengthened by intimacy with God

"That you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom & spiritual understanding; that you may have a walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work & increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience & longsuffering with joy.." (Colossians 1:9-11)

I encourage you to pray this apostolic prayer over yourselves today! I know that I yearn to be filled with the knowledge of His will! I want to know what God is doing, what He is going to do. I want Him to reveal to me whatever it is in His heart to show me! I pray that He give you the same desire, to know Him more and that your wisdom & spiritual understanding may increase! That your faith may increase! Ask the Lord today to help you walk worthy of Him, pleasing him in everything (fully).

It seems like so much and impossible, but to "walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him," doesn't mean to be perfect. Everything that we do must be done for His glory. (1 Corinthians 10:31) But you should be walking with such steady, continual faith, assured that God is giving you of his power to do what is right! Any time you take one step forward to believe God, to do His will, He gives you the strength to please Him, and in pleasing Him you will be able to bear fruit in EVERY GOOD WORK!  And when you begin to bear fruit, your knowledge of God will increase! What a wonderful cycle! Pray to know His will, walk worthy of Him, bear fruit in every good work, and your knowledge of God will increase..and then keep going!
He will strengthen you with all might! You will be able to walk this walk, you will be able to win the battle!

The end of this prayer says, "strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience & longsuffering with joy." Look real carefully at what is in bold print here: patience & longsuffering with joy. Probably not something we're all to thrilled about. We know what patience is, for the most part. But what is longsuffering? Well, in the most technical of terms, it means to suffer long. Yuck!
However, what is so unusual and curious about the end of this prayer is how it ends with the word JOY! I don't know about you, but I don't know if I have ever waited patiently or suffered long with joy. This is pretty much an oxymoron in human terms.

To follow Christ, is to follow in His foot steps. To do what He did, to say what He said. If there is one thing that Jesus knows about, it's about suffering long! Read in the gospels about his walk up to Calvary. That wasn't a short period of time. Jesus suffered looooong for us, but with what? With JOY! The joy of knowing that His Father's heart was filled with joy of having us close to Him! So this can be done! And Jesus will strengthen us will all might to go through whatever we may be going through with joy!
I pray that you may know Him better today!

    Salt of the earth

I want to add a little more flavor to my life. Reading over the concept of being salt of the earth has intrigued me and has challenged me. Up to this point, I don't feel that I have been quite an influence of flavor on most of the people around me. Not that people don't know that I am a Christian, but that I have not made people realize that I am a Christian of words and action.

The hardest thing for us as Christians to do, is to actually walk our walk of faith. Well, for me it is at least. It is very frustrating to be different than everyone else. Which makes me question; why do we try to blend in when we live our lives trying so hard to be seen as individuals? I want to stand out, but I guess not that much. However, coming to Christ, I am given a mold that only gives me one option. To be like Jesus. And Jesus was like no other person on this earth. So, I am purposing to myself to take small steps to be more like Christ and to show others the light and love of Jesus.
